ABLE2
ABLE2
The ABLE2 Disability Sport awareness week took place between the 26th March and the 1st April engaging over 350 disabled people from south London across 18 activities.
We secured £20,000 from Capital Radio’s Help a London Child (HALC) to sustain 7 of the 18 ABLE2 projects that took place during that awareness week.
For the seven ABLE2 projects in South London, the HALC funding has been a huge benefit to over two hundred disabled children in their confidence building, becoming an integral part of the local community and even achieving targets thought “unachievable” before. With support from HALC, PRO-ACTIVE South London have been able to provide opportunities for organisations and individuals to achieve more in raising the profile of disability sport in the last year than had happened previously. It would not be an exaggeration to say that some of these projects really have been life changing for the young people who took part.
Considering that it is more difficult to coach disabled children or young people because several impairment groups need specialist or one-to-one coaching, it is a credit to the seven projects that they have achieved an average of 30 disabled participants per activity.
What is important now is that steps are taken to ensure the philosophy of the Inclusive & Active Action Plan of integrating disabled sportsmen and women into regular mainstream sport are taken.
We will be running another ABLE2 awareness week during 2010. If you are interest in running an activity please contact David Gentles to express your interest.
