Sport Unlimited
Sport Unlimited
In September 2008, Sport England announced the national roll-out of its £36 million ‘Sport Unlimited’ initiative to get more children and young people taking part in sports that interest them most outside of school.
Sport Unlimited offers young people 10-week taster sessions in sports which they have requested and aims to get 22,000 participants in South London to join clubs and continue with sport when the 10 weeks are up.
Sport Unlimited will make a significant contribution to the Government’s target of giving children and young people the opportunity to do 5 hours of PE and sport a week at school and in the community.
PRO-ACTIVE South London has developed an application process which involves consultation with each of the South London Community Sport and Physcal Activity Networks, Young People, National Governing Bodies and other community stakeholders.
In South London Sport Unlimited will provide:
- Increased opportunities for the “semi sporty” population – estimated to be 50% of young people – currently doing 2-3 hours per week
- Term time programmes, delivered out of school hours in club and community settings
- A focus on high quality, attractive provision that meets the actual needs of young people
- £250K per annum within South London, to be distributed through a comprehensive grant system, max grant limit of £50K per organisation
