30.09.2008 | Kingston CSPAN launch covered on Match of the Day
Kingston gets Active.

A successful partnership between Kingston Council, Fulham Football Community Sports Trust and Kingston Volunteer Centre has been awarded £357.000 to deliver a three year programme to develop opportunities for Disabled Athletes, Girls and Women and Volunteering in Sport.
To celebrate this success and formation of Kingston's CSPAN (Community Sport & Physical Activity Network) the projects was launched on the 17th September 2008 at Fulham Football Club's training ground at Motspur Park to coincide with the handover of the Olympic Torch from the Paralympics in Beijing.
This award was the result of a successful bid to Sport England's Community Investment Fund (CIF). The bid was based on excellent partnership work by the CSPAN.
Hilary Garner, Chair of Kingston's CSPAN said; "Girls just wanna ave fun, Good Sports and Positive Minds (the names of the three projects) represent an important investment into the well being of the people of Kingston. This funding is much welcomed with open arms as it will significantly improve access and widen opportunities for all".
Christine Double, Partnership Director for PRO-ACTIVE South London said, "It is great to see all of the hard work from the CSPAN members finally come to fruition. It was only a year ago that the group had their first network meeting and already they are having a huge impact on improving sport and physical activity opportunities in the borough"
Russell Findlay, Head of Fulham's Community Sports Trust said, "Fulham as a club have a strong commitment to our local community and are passionate about the benefits sport can bring to all. I am delighted that this funding from Sport England will enable us to work with The Royal Borough of Kingston to create new sporting opportunities for young people with a disability and to inspire young women to lead healthy and active lifestyles through sport. This funding forms part of nearly half a million pounds the community sports trust has sourced to support community sport in Kingston, over this and coming years".
The launch event attracted coverage from the BBC's Match of the Day. Follow the link to watch the coverage.
