Active Steps - Sutton

Active Steps is a groundbreaking initiative that is improving the health of Sutton residents by motivating them to walk and cycle for journeys that would normally be made by car.

Delivered by Sutton and Merton PCT, in partnership with Sutton Council and Transport for London, Active Steps could be the largest combined health and travel scheme in the UK.

Patients who could benefit from being more physically active are signposted by health professionals such as GPs, pharmacists, smoking cessation advisors and dieticians.

During a free 12 week support programme, service users meet with an NHS advisor who will help them overcome barriers to walking and cycling and create personal goals. Free step-counters are provided, along with cycling and walking maps and access to free cycle training. Revolutionary support will be given by way of motivational text messages or postcards.

After 12 weeks, the service user meets the same advisor again to discuss how they got on, overcome any new barriers and re-set goals.

If you would like to know more information, or would like to signpost patients, please contact Abby Christie, Active Steps Officer on 020 8254 8208 or abby.christie@smpct.nhs.uk
