Step into Sport Conferences 2007/08

Over 600 young people attended 10 Step into Sport conferences across London in November

Throughout November, 10 Step into Sport Conferences were held at venues across London. These conferences mark the start the 2007-2008 Step into Sport Programme.

Step into Sport is a co-ordinated programme of leadership and volunteering designed to support young leaders in developing their skills and experience as volunteers in school and particularly in their local communities. Each School Sports Partnership is invited to send up to 20 young people who show a strong interest in volunteering to their local one day conference.

These conferences provided young people with an introduction to the Step into Sport Programme, gave them an opportunity to speak to representative of National Governing Bodies of Sport about volunteering opportunities, as well as providing some excellent leadership and team work experiences throughout the day. Each conference was also opened by a Sporting Champion who spoke to the students about their experiences in sport and in particular how leadership and volunteering has helped them get to where they are today.

The conferences resulted in over 600 16-19 year olds signing up to the Step into Sport Programme as Community Volunteers. The PRO-ACTIVE Partnership Services Team is now working with the National Governing Bodies from 13 different sports, 51 School Sports Partnerships and a whole host of other partner organisations to ensure that all Community Volunteers who attended the conference are placed in high quality volunteer placements to work towards achieving their Bronze (50 hours of volunteering in a community setting), Silver (100 hours) and or Gold (200 hours) awards.

Over the next 12 months the Community Volunteers will be gaining valuable skills and experience as young leaders as well as helping a huge number of community organisations, clubs and event management teams to deliver high quality sport and physical activity to people throughout London. The conferences received very positive feedback from those who attended, and planning for next year’s programme is well under way.
