£90,000 invested in the Active Celebration in Merton and Sutton.
NHS South West London have commissioned PRO-ACTIVE South London, the County Sports Partnership for the South London sub region, to deliver a programme of activities to increase sport and physical activity levels in Sutton and Merton in the build up to, during and post 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The programme is funded jointly between NHS South West London and NHS London
Launched in December 2011, the ‘Active Celebration’ programme will deliver 12 months of activities with the aim of raising physical activity participation amongst the residents of Sutton and Merton and capitalize on hosting the London Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Dr Val Day, Interim Director of Public Health said "Leading a physically active lifestyle is important for health and NHS South West London are delighted to work with PRO-ACTIVE South London to support our residents to be active. Hosting the Olympic and Paralympics Games in London is a once in a lifetime event for most people and this programme will encourage them to increase their own activity levels and will leave a real legacy after the games have finished".
Christine Double, Director of PRO-ACTIVE South London said: “We are delighted to be commissioned by NHS South West London to deliver the Active Celebration. Research shows that only 10 per cent of Sutton and Merton residents are active enough to benefit their health. It is our aim to harness the power of the Olympic and Paralympics games and get more people active.”
PRO-ACTIVE South London is delivering the Active Celebration programme in partnership with existing sport and physical activity providers in Sutton and Merton. This approach will ensure that this programme builds upon existing strengths, is sustainable and leaves a lasting legacy.
The Active Celebration aims to get 3000 residents more active, increase in the capacity of clubs and local organisations to deliver quality activities to local people by training 144 coaches and by growing the numbers of trained volunteers by 250.
